As coenzymes, lipoic acid plays a role in two key oxidative decarboxylation reactions, namely, the production and transfer of acyl groups in pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and α - ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex. Thiooctanoic acid can accept the acetyl group of acyl group and pyruvate, form a thioester bond, and then transfer the acetyl group to the sulfur atom of coenzyme a molecule.
