Introduction:
Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the root of Astragalus membranaceus. It is a pale yellow powder at room temperature and tastes bitter. Hardly soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. In the case of ferric chloride, it is green and forms an orange precipitate in the presence of lead acetate. Soluble in alkali and ammonia. It turns yellow and soon turns black and brown.
