Introduction:
L-rhamnose is called α-L-Rhamnopyranose, 6-Dexoxy-D-mannose , 6-Deoxy-L-mannose , Isodulcite, L-Mannomethylose , D-Rhamnose. Most of Rhamnose in nature is L-Rhamnose , existing in plants as the types of Polysaccharides, glycosides, plant gum and bacterial polysaccharides. Its sweetness is 33% of sugar.

It is widely existing in bacteria and plants. In bacteria , it exists in the cell surface as the sugar 's polysaccharide or lipopolysaccharide, which is consisted of rhamnose. It also exist in Rhus toxicodendron as free saccharide, or existing as the type of glycoside and polysaccharidesuch as gum arabic.
Plant origin: it is existing most of plants in the type of micro-saccharide, compound saccharide as plant glucosides, polysaccharide, or existed in toxin of sumach.
The synthetic route of rhamnose in bacteria:
α-glucose -1 -phosphoric acid → dTOP-D-glucose → dTDP-4-keto -6 - deoxy-D-glucose → dTDP-4-discretionary-L-rhamnose → dTDP-L-rhamnose
Properties: Pure rhamnose is colorless crystalline powder, soluble in water and methanol, and slightly soluble in ethanol. There are two types of crystals, α and β . α is monohydrate, and loss crystal water in heat condition and become βtype ( Molecular weight 164.16);β can be turned into α in moist condition; Molecular weight of α-L-rhamnose is 182.11
Uses:rhamnose can be used to test the permeability of intestinal tract, or used as sweeting agent.
