Product Description
Genipin is an active aglycone derived from an iridoid glycoside called geniposide, which is found in the fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. Genipin is a hydrolytic product of geniposide. Genipin has been used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Function & application
Genipin is the product of gardenoside hydrolyzed by β - glucosidase. It is an excellent natural cross-linking agent. It can be cross-linked with protein, collagen, gelatin and chitosan to make biomaterials, such as artificial bone and wound dressing materials. Its toxicity is far lower than glutaraldehyde and other commonly used chemical cross-linking agents. It can also be used to treat liver diseases, reduce blood pressure, relieve constipation, etc. Research from an Israeli medical center has shown that genipin can relieve the symptoms of type II diabetes. Genipin can also be used as fingerprint collection reagent and cross-linking agent for preparing immobilized enzyme.
