Introduction:
Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, or γ-aminobutyric acid ,Aminobutyric acid or GABA, is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Its principal role is reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. In humans, GABA is also directly responsible for the regulation of muscle tone. GABA is synthesized from glutamate via the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) with pyridoxal phosphate as a cofactor. This process converts glutamate into GABA .
Function:
1. This neurotransmitter appears to have a significant influence on the pituitary gland’s hormone secretion, primarily through its hypothalamic effect.
2. GABA is also the most important and widespread inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.
3. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is major neurotransmitter widely distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS).
