Sodium iodide is a white solid formed by the reaction of sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide with hydroiodate and then by evaporation of the solution. It is used as a raw material for iodine production and is used in medicine and photography. The acid solution of sodium iodide is reduced by the production of hydroiodate. The formula is NaI. Molecular weight 149.89. A colorless cubic crystal or white granular substance. The taste is salty and slightly bitter. Soluble in glycerol. It has strong hygroscopic property. Gradually absorb moisture in the air until the water content reaches 5%, it can be oxidized by the air to release iodine and turn brown, the aqueous solution is slightly alkaline, also has the same change, can slightly add alkali to keep stable. The pH of the aqueous solution is 8 ~ 9.5. Should avoid light airtight preservation.

Function & Application

Trace determination of cesium, platinum and thallium, iodine cosolvent, photographic;

It is the raw material for producing inorganic iodide and organic iodide.

Used in medicine for thyroid tumor prevention and treatment, expectorant and diuretic, food additive, photographic agent;

In medicine used as X-ray contrast agent, can be used for cystography, retrograde urography, t-tube cholangiography, etc.

Used as an analytical reagent.
